How to Tell if Your Canal Wall Needs Repairing: Warning Signs for SE Queensland Homeowners

Why canal walls deteriorate the way they do?
Understanding what's happening underneath helps you interpret what you're seeing at the surface.
A revetment wall on a SE Queensland canal is under constant pressure from two directions. The soil behind it pushes outward, and the water in front of it pushes back. Tidal movement, boat wash and rain events all change the balance of those forces over time. As water moves through the tidal cycle it passes through the soil behind the wall, and each cycle carries a small amount of material with it. Over years, that process creates voids behind the wall that you can't see from the surface.
At the same time, the base of the wall is exposed to constant water movement at the toe. Rock armouring at the base shifts gradually. Panel joints open slightly. Footings erode. None of this is dramatic when it's happening. All of it matters when it reaches a tipping point.
The warning signs described below are the visible evidence of these processes. By the time they're visible, the process has usually been underway for a while.

Warning sign one: the wall face has moved
Stand at the edge and look along the face of your revetment wall. It should form a reasonably straight, vertical line from one end to the other. If you can see a section that bows outward toward the water, even slightly, the wall is telling you something important.
Horizontal movement in a revetment wall means the soil pressure behind it has exceeded what the structure can resist at that point. The footing may have shifted. The wall panels may have separated from their connections. The backfill may have voided enough to allow movement that previously wasn't possible.
A slight bow that's been stable for years is a different situation to a bow that has noticeably increased over the past six months. If you can see movement has occurred and you're not sure whether it's ongoing, mark the wall with a reference point and check it again in four to six weeks. Active movement is more urgent than historical displacement that has stabilised.
Either way, visible horizontal movement warrants a professional assessment. It doesn't fix itself.

Warning sign two: cracking or separation in the wall face
Cracks in a revetment wall face are not all equal. A hairline crack in a concrete panel that has been there since the wall was built and hasn't changed is different to a crack that has opened up recently or one where you can see material behind it.
The cracks worth paying attention to are horizontal cracks running along panel joints or through the face of the wall, vertical cracks that run the full height of a panel, and any crack wide enough that you can see soil or void behind it.
Horizontal cracking along a panel joint often indicates the panel above has moved relative to the one below. Vertical cracking through a panel face can indicate the panel itself has been placed under stress it wasn't designed for, often because the footing or the material behind it has shifted.
If you can push a piece of wire into a crack and it goes further than a centimetre or two, there's a void behind the wall at that point. That information matters.

Warning sign three: subsidence behind the wall
Walk the full length of your bank and look at the ground surface immediately behind the revetment wall. You're looking for any depression, low point or area where the surface is sitting lower than the surrounding ground.
Subsidence behind a revetment wall is caused by soil migrating through the wall or washing out via the base. The void that creates the surface depression is below ground level, which means what you're seeing at the surface represents the top of a larger problem underneath.
This is particularly important to check near structures. A depression running parallel to the wall behind a paved entertaining area, a pool surround, a garden bed or a fence line tells you that the ground supporting those structures has lost material. How much material is a question that requires investigation. But the surface depression is your signal that the investigation is warranted.

Warning sign four: fencing or structures near the edge have moved
A fence post that was vertical eighteen months ago and is now leaning toward the water. A garden edge that has dropped on the canal side. A retaining wall at the back of the bank that has cracked horizontally.
Structures on or near the bank respond to ground movement before the ground surface itself shows obvious signs. If something that was straight is no longer straight, and the most logical explanation is movement in the ground beneath it, that observation is useful information about what's happening at the wall.
This is especially relevant on properties where the bank is landscaped. Dense planting and paving can mask surface subsidence that would be obvious on a bare slope. If the structures on top of the bank are moving, look more carefully at the surface beneath the landscaping.

Warning sign five: change at the base of the wall
This is the one most owners never check because it requires getting down to the water's edge and looking at the wall from the water side at low tide.
Walk to the end of your jetty at the lowest tide of the month and look back at the base of your revetment wall. What you're looking for is erosion or displacement of the rock armouring at the toe of the wall, any section where the base of the wall appears to have undercut or shifted, and gaps between the base of the wall and the canal bed where there shouldn't be gaps.
The toe of the wall is where tidal scour and boat wash do most of their erosive work. It's also the point where early intervention is most effective. A toe that's losing rock armouring and showing early erosion can be stabilised relatively efficiently. A toe that's been eroding for years unchecked can undermine the footing of the wall above it and turn a simple rock placement job into a full wall replacement.
If you haven't looked at the base of your wall from the water side in the last twelve months, the low tide check is worth doing this week.

Warning sign six: water coming through the wall
After a heavy rain event or at high tide, look at the face of your revetment wall from the water side. Some seepage through a wall is normal and in some wall types expected. What's not normal is a concentrated stream of water or muddy water coming through a specific point in the wall.
Muddy water coming through the wall face means soil is moving with the water. That's active erosion happening behind the wall in real time. The point where the water is exiting is telling you where the wall has failed to retain the material behind it.
This one warrants prompt attention. Active soil loss through the wall face accelerates the voiding process significantly faster than normal tidal seepage, and the situation tends to worsen with each subsequent tidal cycle or rain event until it's addressed.

How to decide whether to act now or monitor
Not every warning sign requires immediate repair. But every warning sign requires a decision, and that decision should be based on information rather than optimism.
A single minor crack that has been stable for years is worth noting and monitoring. Multiple warning signs appearing on the same wall section, or any single sign that has worsened noticeably over the past few months, warrants a professional assessment.
The practical question to ask yourself is: if this wall fails in the next six months, what does that cost me? If the answer involves a pool, a paved entertaining area, a garage, a significant garden or a structure close to the edge, the cost of getting it wrong is high enough to justify the cost of getting it assessed properly now.
A professional assessment from a marine contractor who works on these structures regularly will tell you whether what you're seeing is a maintenance issue, a repair job or something that needs more urgent attention. That information has real value in your decision making, whatever the outcome.
