Most marine contractors will tell you they've been around a while. Not many can put three generations of the same family on the water and actually mean it.
Gold Coast Barges started with a single barge. That first vessel was built in 2000, and Greg's father Max bought it in 2002. One barge, one bloke, and a stretch of South East Queensland coastline that needed someone who knew how to work in and around the water.
Max wasn't a barge man by trade. He'd been a panel beater and a farmer up in North Queensland, and when he retired to the Gold Coast he lasted all of five minutes before the itchy feet set in and he bought himself a small business. That's how a panel beater from up north ended up running barges on the Gold Coast.
From there, Greg and Tracy took it on and built it up. One barge became a fleet. A one-man operation became a crew. The work grew from the odd job into rock armouring, revetment walls, screw piling, dredging, demolition and salvage right across the Gold Coast, Brisbane, the Redlands, Moreton Bay and into Northern New South Wales. Same family, same patch of water, a lot more capability.
Now the third generation is on board. Greg and Tracy's son Nik grew up around the business and works it himself, a capable skipper and excavator operator in his own right. He's also the one pulling us forward, building AI into how we run the company and quietly working out where that takes us next. Three generations in, and the youngest already has one eye over the horizon.
We've had a couple of nods over the years, and we'll be straight about both.
In 2017 we were a national finalist for Trades Business of the Year at the Optus My Business Awards. Finalist, not winner. To collect it you had to buy a ticket to the awards night at a thousand dollars a head, and we decided that was an expensive way to clap for someone else. So we stayed home and kept working. The certificate went on the wall anyway.
In 2022 we did take the win, named Family Business category winner at the Gold Coast Business Excellence Awards. That one landed a bit differently, because the family is the whole point.
None of this is about trophies. It matters because when you call Gold Coast Barges, you get a family that's been reading these waterways for over twenty years, that owns its own fleet and plant, and that turns up to do the work itself. No rotating staff, no national call centre handing you around. Just people who've spent two decades working out how to get a job done on the water, and who'll still be here when the next one comes up.
